The Heart Beat of Taiwan: The Traditional Market / The Wet Market

Fresh seafood at a traditional market in Taiwan

“A hidden food paradise where you can eat like a local and feel the island’s true spirit.”

Visiting a traditional market is the fastest way to understand a city and local life. It reflects the local culture and lifestyle, and hides many delicious local foods that only locals know about.

In Taiwan, we call them “Traditional Markets.” (/ tshài-tshī-á / 菜市仔). In English-speaking countries, you might know them as “wet markets.” The name comes from the water used to keep the floor clean, but for some people, it represents fresh ingredients and warm human connections.👀

Different Markets, Different Stories🍇

Every traditional market has its own character, shaped by the people who live around it. For example, Second Market in Taichung only sells “Jute Soup” (Ma-I / 麻薏) in summer. Nanmen Market in Taipei, because of its early Mainlander population, sells mostly military dependents’ village-style cooked food. With different visitors, the tastes are also different. Traditional markets are more than just places to buy food. They are a reflection of the people, history, and everyday life of each neighborhood.

The Real Taiwan Daily Life🗣️

The traditional market is where you can get a glimpse of everyday Taiwan. You can hear people chatting with vendors, see locals doing their morning shopping, and experience a side of Taiwan that you might not see in tourist areas. The warm human connection in traditional markets cannot be replaced.

The traditional market = the real Taiwan daily.
